Couchlingo is a browser extension and website that helps you learn languages with the subtitles of the videos you watch. This page explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
- Account information: your email address and, if you sign in with Google, the basic profile Google shares with us. Passwords are stored hashed.
- Learning data: the words and phrases you save or mark as known, the subtitle sentence they came from, and your settings (languages, subtitle display).
- Viewing activity: on Netflix and YouTube only, the title, episode and watch progress of the videos where you use Couchlingo, so your history and statistics can sync between devices.
- Subtitle text: the extension reads the subtitles your browser already downloaded. Lines you translate or look up are sent to translation and dictionary services (see below) to get a result.
- Technical data: a random identifier for each installed extension, and compatibility reports (which site, which error) so we can fix breakages.
- Subscription status: payments are handled by Whop. We never see or store your card details, only whether your subscription is active.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
- The extension only runs on Netflix, YouTube and couchlingo.com. It does not read or record your browsing anywhere else.
- We do not use your data to determine creditworthiness or for any purpose unrelated to Couchlingo.
Services that process data for us
- Translation and dictionaries: Google Translate, MyMemory, Free Dictionary API, Wiktionary, Tatoeba.
- In-context explanations: an AI model provider (OpenAI) receives the word and its sentence.
- Payments: Whop. Sign-in: Google, if you choose it.
Storage and security
Your account data is stored on our servers in the European Union. On your computer, the extension keeps your session token in the browser's extension storage and caches your words locally. Connections to our servers are encrypted (HTTPS).
Your choices
You can unpair the extension at any time from its popup, and uninstalling it removes its local data. To get a copy of your data or delete your account, email support@couchlingo.com. We answer within 30 days.
Chrome Web Store user data
The use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and notify you in the app for material changes.
